Byron York argued that “there’s a case” to be made by Republicans to hold Vice President Kamala Harris to the positions she previously held before becoming the Democratic Party’s 2024 nominee.
Harris has changed her views on multiple issues since essentially taking President Joe Biden’s place in the 2024 election cycle, including border security and universal Medicare. York, the Washington Examiner’s chief political correspondent, noted how Harris was a very progressive candidate when she ran for president in 2020, but now the only position she has not changed her views on is abortion.
“And I think there’s a case to be made right now for Republicans to hold her to these old positions that we see her saying on tape everywhere, and not pay a lot of attention to a statement released by some anonymous staffer and to say ‘until Kamala Harris tells us herself what she believes in, this is what she said,’” York said on Fox News’s Special Report with Bret Baier.
Harris’s shift on multiple issues could possibly be a move to reach out to more centrist voters, a move former President Donald Trump made by conducting a one-on-one live interview with X owner Elon Musk, who has considered himself a moderate. York argued the interview was “a net plus” for the former president, as it allowed people to listen to him speak conversationally rather than giving “a stump speech.”
“And I think he got to make the case for himself,” York said. “He got to wander all over the lot, which he does, but it allowed people to listen to another side of him, and that’s a plus for him.”
Musk has offered to conduct a one-on-one interview with Harris as well. As of Wednesday morning, Harris has yet to partake in a press interview since stepping in for Biden as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee.

Former White House adviser Kellyanne Conway has advised Trump to focus on “fewer insults” on the 2024 campaign trail, and that he should highlight the policy contrast between him and Harris. Conway argued that the former president has “a 2-to-1 advantage” over both Biden and Harris on “the key issues that are important to people.”
Polling data conducted from Aug. 6-9 found that Harris is leading Trump in three swing states, including Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Trump lost all three of these states, as well as Arizona and Georgia, during the 2020 Electoral College.
