NextImg:Republicans should follow MTG’s lead on town hall meetings

Democratic agitators, left-wing saboteurs, and liberal activists have plagued town hall meetings hosted by Republicans in Congress since January. They’ve shouted and yelled, created disruptions, and made it uncomfortable for Republicans to talk to their constituents. It’s the same tactics Democrats have been using since the 1960s to silence opposition. In response, the National Republican Congressional Committee suggested not holding town hall meetings to avoid the wrath of these agitators. It was very bad advice.

Running away from these town hall meetings only empowers Democrats. Anyone knows the only way to defeat a bully is to confront the bully head-on. This is why Republicans should follow the lead of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who held her own town hall meeting on Tuesday night and refused to back down from left-wing protesters seeking to disrupt her meeting and silence her voice. However, Greene wasn’t having it and set the tone from the beginning.

“If you’re planning to act up, scream, and protest, you’re going to be thrown out,” Greene said.

It’s the kind of assertiveness that other Republicans should follow. Timidity will get them nowhere. Greene knows this and refuses to back down from opponents. It’s this fighting spirit that the GOP needs to embrace. Running away from holding meetings is horrible optics, but it also sends a horrible message to voters, supporters, and detractors alike.

Not holding town hall meetings emboldens bullies looking to disrupt these meetings to continue their behavior and look for ways to expand their aggressive tactics. To supporters, it makes them look like cowards. This timidity was indicative of the Republicans of yesteryear, who went along with being shouted at and bullied into silence and submission. GOP voters realized this over the years and rejected politicians who were afraid to stand up for themselves and their ideals.

Greene recognizes this and refuses to be intimidated. After her town hall, she posted on social media explaining why she will not back down.

“I’m not intimidated by the Democrats who tried to shut down my town hall tonight,” Greene said in her post. “I refused to tolerate their selfish attempts to disrupt an event that was for all of my constituents, not just the ones who could make the most noise.”

HOUSE REPUBLICANS PLAN TO AVOID TOWN HALLS DURING CONGRESSIONAL RECESS

This is a good thing — a very good thing. As much as some like to criticize the Georgia congresswoman, just as many should duplicate her backbone and courage. Greene has emerged as a true leader who refuses to back down from political opposition. Hopefully, others in the party will follow her lead and challenge these agitators and rabble-rousers.

All Republicans must learn what Greene appears to know: when it comes to Democrat aggression, one cannot give them anything. If you give the left-wingers an inch, they’ll try to take a mile.
