NextImg:Republicans should embrace JK Rowling’s moral courage - Washington Examiner

British author J.K. Rowling is known for her wildly popular Harry Potter book series. She’s “the first billion-dollar author,” according to Forbes. Politically, Rowling opposed Brexit, described both former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama as “extraordinary,” declared former President Donald Trump as “worse than Voldemort,” and supports abortion rights. She is also an unapologetic defender of biological women.

She is an invaluable ally.

Rowling’s unabashed stand against transgenderism became public several years ago. But recently, she has been more vocal about it and faces a greater backlash. Perhaps this is due to the increasing militancy coming from the transgender movement. In the past few years, it has become more prevalent in entertainment and advertising. We, as a collective society, are required not only to accept it but also to celebrate it. Rowling says no. This viewpoint is held by many, but few others have the fame, reach, and power Rowling possesses.

Republicans are hard-pressed to find anyone of significance who aligns with them on any issue, much less the most explosive ones. It’s one thing to have well-known personalities on the Right speak out against transgender ideology. It is quite another to have an internationally known figure consistently and forcefully disagree with progressives on the subject.

Just this week, Rowling posted on X about a new law in Scotland that, among other things, would classify criticism of certain people as “stirring up hatred.” Rowling states, “If what I’ve written here qualifies as an offense under the terms of the new act, I look forward to being arrested when I return to the birthplace of the Scottish Enlightenment.” United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak publicly supports Rowling in her stand. Still, Rowling’s determination to speak up for millions of women highlights some key points.

For a start, the power of high-profile support and the ability to find unity when battling over key issues. It’s easy to think transgenderism isn’t being countered in any way. From an outside perspective, that appears to be the case. But when someone like Rowling uses her massive platform, people take note. Even anger moves the needle. Rowling’s convictions about other topics should not sway any Republican from appreciating what she is doing now. Republicans can’t be too picky when living in a society that gleefully seeks to crush notions of biological realities. Transgender affirmation is not an extension of first-wave feminism. If anything, it’s a rejection of the most basic rights and privileges women are free to enjoy. It is nothing but misogyny masquerading as allyship.

In far too many instances, women are either afraid to say something, or their defiance is entirely disregarded. When a woman like Rowling enters the conversation, her mere presence and popularity can’t be ignored. Progressives look and say, “But I thought she was one of us!” Rowling has upended the discussions surrounding transgenderism.

She is neither ashamed to promote reality nor frightened of any repercussions. That kind of rebellion appears extreme. But it’s exactly what we need. The Left is unafraid to preach delusion. The Right should stand firm on the truth and make room for unlikely companions like J.K. Rowling.
