NextImg:Republicans seize another veto-proof majority

You probably missed it, but an obscure politician left the Democratic Party recently and caused a noteworthy shift in state political control.

State Rep. Francis Thompson quit the Democratic Party in Louisiana and became a Republican on St. Patrick's Day, March 17.

IS MICHELANGELO'S 'DAVID' INAPPROPRIATE FOR CHILDREN?

"There are values and principles that I firmly hold on to the guide my decisions," Thompson announced. "My conservative voting record over my years in the legislature speaks for itself. The push the past several years by Democratic leadership on both the national and state level to support certain issues does not align with those values and principles that are part of my Christian life."

The significance of this defection is that for the first time in 150 years — since Reconstruction — Republicans now hold a veto-proof majority in both houses of Louisiana's state legislature.

Thompson isn't alone. There have to be a lot of people of faith who are watching today's Democratic Party and are completely in shock at how far to the left it has run, without a corresponding movement of anyone else to the right.

This may not change too much about how the state is governed.

Between Republican and three independent members of the state house, they already did manage to override a veto by Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards last year of the state's congressional map. But that was the first time a veto had been overridden in Louisiana since the early 1990s. Now, legislative Republicans can override vetoes without any help.

Not that there are any vetoes waiting for an override at the moment, but Edwards will remain in office for the rest of this year. If there's a veto to override, they can do it. Republicans are also favored to win back the governorship in this November's election.
