House Republicans are pressing the Biden administration over its response to the widespread wildfires in Maui, with some members going so far as to accuse Democrats of politicizing the issue to further their climate change agenda.

Republicans on the House Oversight Committee announced they would be opening an investigation into the federal government’s response to the fire, raising questions about the alleged lack of urgency from the Biden administration to visit the island.

"While the true extent of the tragedy is still unknown, Democrats have reflexively absorbed the Maui wildfires into their politicized, climate change narrative,” Rep. Pat Fallon (R-TX) told the Washington Examiner. “Meanwhile, Republicans on House Oversight are instead taking real steps to examine the federal government's response."

Other lawmakers cited President Joe Biden’s reaction, decrying him for waiting nearly two weeks to travel to the disaster site.

“Joe Biden hasn’t been to East Palestine. He hasn’t been to the border. He didn’t even show up to Maui until people were furious with him, and it was a PR nightmare,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) said. “Biden wants to send another $24 billion to Ukraine, spend $700 million to build housing for illegal aliens, but he thinks a pathetic one time $700 payment is good enough for people who LOST EVERYTHING! Joe Biden sent a loud and clear message to our people in Maui: you’re American so get to the back of the line.”

House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) announced the investigation on Tuesday, contending that the government response “raises serious questions.”

“Americans, especially those impacted by this tragedy, deserve answers,” he said in a statement. “To minimize the risk of waste, fraud, and abuse of taxpayer dollars, the Oversight Committee will examine the federal government’s response in Maui and work with other committees of jurisdiction to ensure accountability.”

The fires in Maui have attracted bipartisan attention, with members of both parties visiting the island in the aftermath of the fires. One of the congressional delegation trips was led by Rep. Ed Case (D-HI), who has expressed skepticism over the House GOP’s plans to probe the federal government’s response.

“The rhetoric causes me concern as to whether the motive is a legitimate congressional oversight motive,” Case told the Honolulu Civil Beat. “This clearly is not a situation to be politicized.”

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) also plans to visit the site, with a trip planned as early as this weekend. McCarthy has supported an investigation into the federal fire response, noting it left him “very concerned.”

“How could you lose that many Americans in today’s age?” McCarthy said during a manufacturing plant in New York last week. “I’m going to be working with committees to investigate what went on so this never happens again.”

At least 115 people have died from the fires so far, with several more still unaccounted for. The fire is the country’s deadliest since 1918 and marks one of the worst natural disasters in the state’s history.
