NextImg:Republicans need to prioritize our border security over Ukraine’s

Freshman Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL) gave an impassioned speech about the dire situation on the southern border on Wednesday, and she accurately blamed the crisis directly on President Joe Biden’s immigration policies.

The whole speech is worth watching, but here are some notable segments:

MORE AMNESTIES WILL ONLY MAKE BORDER CRISIS WORSE

“We walked through and we got to hear women tell us their story. And their stories are brutalizing … Because when a woman sits there and she tells not just about being raped, but how many times a day she is raped, when she tells you about having to lay in that bed while they come in and out, and in and out, it’s disgusting. It’s despicable.”

“Folks, you look at the number of people who have died at the border because Joe Biden has made it more and more enticing to come here. Make no mistake, this is a result of failed policies. We could fix this. We can’t throw money at this and fix it. We have to actually change the policies.”

Britt is 100% right. What is happening on the border isn’t a resource problem. It is a policy problem. If Republicans could force Biden to change his immigration policies, force him to reimplement "Remain in Mexico" and stop catching and releasing immigrants into the United States, the border crisis would end very quickly.

But is border security the top priority of Britt’s Republican colleagues?

Let’s check in with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell for the answer: “Providing assistance for the Ukrainians to defeat the Russians — that’s the No. 1 priority of the United States right now, according to most Republicans.”

There you have it. The reason why our border crisis is persisting, the reason why Biden is not being forced to change his border policies, border policies that are overwhelmingly unpopular with the public, is because for some Republicans, the bigger priority is giving money to Ukraine.

To be clear, I support sending more aid to help Ukraine defeat Russia’s invasion of sovereign Ukrainian territory.

But protecting our national sovereignty is infinitely more important than what is happening in Ukraine right now.
