Robert Bigelow, the Republican real estate tycoon and largest individual donor to a pro-DeSantis PAC, indicated he’ll turn his support over to former President Donald Trump.

Bigelow, the founder of Budget Suites of America and Bigelow Aerospace, made a contribution of $20 million to Gov. Ron DeSantis's (R-FL) super PAC, Never Back Down, earlier this year, which was the biggest single donation to any 2024 GOP presidential candidate.

“Who would you want as a commander? I’d want somebody that would be a hell of an a**-kicker if he needed to be,” Bigelow told the Financial Times in an interview published Wednesday. “On the face of it, you lean toward Trump.”

“I think Trump is too strong,” Bigelow added. “I think Trump has the momentum, the inertia, to beat him.” Trump was a “bull,” Bigelow added, but DeSantis was “dinner.”

This summer, DeSantis opted for a campaign reset to try to hold the national spotlight as he’s been steadily underperforming in national polls. In August, Bigelow’s relationship with DeSantis took a dive when the megadonor said he would not be making any additional donations unless DeSantis turned things around, taking issue with his “extremism” and Florida’s six-week abortion ban.

"Our campaign is grateful for the tens of thousands of grassroots supporters — as well as donors — who have made it possible for us to build an unmatched organization in the early nominating states and to have the capacity to compete for the long haul," Bryan Griffin, press secretary for DeSantis's presidential campaign, told the Washington Examiner in August.

After airing out his concerns with the Florida governor, Bigelow told the Financial Times he expected DeSantis to contact him. However, it was his wife, Casey DeSantis, who called two weeks after the comments.

“Not having him bothering to call me for an explanation taught me that he’s more of a user of people, actually, and that I didn’t matter enough for him to pick up the phone,” Bigelow said.

Last week, Trump and DeSantis took the same stage on the same day in Florida for the first time since the governor launched his presidential bid. Trump showed up strong at the Florida Freedom Summit, and a number of GOP state lawmakers committed to backing the former president, showing DeSantis is losing support in his home state. In a recent University of North Florida poll, Trump has a massive lead over DeSantis in Florida, holding 59% Republican primary voters to 29%, respectively.

The Washington Examiner reached out to DeSantis’s campaign for comment.
