You may know that Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) was a teacher and a middle school principal in the Bronx before he ran for Congress in 2000. Do you know that the public school he ran was called the Cornerstone Academy for Social Action?

Bowman was just defeated for reelection in the Democratic primary Tuesday, and with his name in the news, it’s worth recalling the existence of this school.

This was a public school that described its purpose as “Social Action,” and it was run by a left-wing activist who would establish himself at the far left of the Democratic caucus in Congress.

Funding this school is using public dollars to advance a political agenda — left-wing social action. I bring this up now because we are in the middle of a panic about religious schools or right-of-center schools even indirectly getting taxpayer money.

CNN’s Anderson Cooper is really worried that students at private schools are being taught “right-wing ideas.”

The Washington Post is really worried that religious parents are allowed to use their school vouchers at religious schools.

This is the beginning of a crusade on the Left, and it’s gaining steam.

What’s bizarre here is not only the absolutism and zealotry of these crusaders against religious schools, but that this crusade is happening at a time when urban and suburban public schools have abandoned any idea of neutrality.

New York public schools have leaned left for decades, and so there’s never been much pretense of balance or impartiality. But these days, in big liberal cities and in counties where left-wing activists have taken over school boards, the schools are explicitly and radically left-wing.

What’s more, they are advancing secular religions, including the notion that a girl becomes a boy if she identifies as a boy.

I wrote about this when one school district ordered teachers to take down their transgender flags:

“But of course a transgender flag on a wall is a political statement. It’s more than that — it’s an anthropological statement. The transgender flag doesn’t merely mean ‘we should be kind to those who don’t conform to gender norms.’ It means ‘a girl is any child who identifies as a girl, and all that matters in this respect is gender, which is not determined by biological sex.'”

This is a view of the human being that most people don’t share. It is a belief not at all required by science or logic. It is, in fact, someone’s unprovable first principle.

Transgender teaching is basically dogma — an article of faith.

Neither CNN nor the Washington Post have fretted about CASA or Loudoun County Public Schools, or school teachers flying transgender flags. That suggests they aren’t worried about ideology funded by public dollars, or by public schools preaching religious dogma.

What they hate is conservative religious institutions getting any help at all.
