Boston Red Sox infielder Justin Turner received 16 stitches on Monday after he was hit in the face with a pitch during a Red Sox spring training game against the Detroit Tigers.

The fastball from Detroit's Matt Manning did not appear intentional, and it was only the ninth pitch of the game, according to a report.

Turner, 38, dropped in the batter's box, and trainers rushed in to assist with the bloody incident.

"He's receiving treatment for soft tissue injuries, and is being monitored for a concussion," a statement from the Red Sox said. "He will undergo further testing, and we'll update as we have more information. Justin is stable, alert, and in good spirits given the circumstances."

The team did not release a timetable for Turner's return, and Turner's wife, Kourtney, said he is recovering.

"Thank you to everyone that reached out about Justin and sent prayers. We're home now and he's resting (okay - maybe listening to the replay of the game)," she wrote in an Instagram story.

He has "16 stitches and a lot of swelling but we are thanking God for no fractures & clear scans! We will respond to messages when we're able. God is good."
