A record-high 72.2 million people are projected to travel 50 miles or more within the United States during the week of July 4, according to a press release by AAA.
The estimate is an increase of 1.7 million people from last year, as AAA reports it responded to about 700,000 roadside assistance matters last year’s Fourth of July week. The most common problems AAA dealt with last year were dead batteries, flat tires, people being locked out of their cars, and running out of gas.

The release also mentioned that gas prices during the week of July 4 are the lowest they have been since 2021, although the Israel-Iran conflict has increased prices marginally. AAA also noted risk factors such as weather, quoting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s prediction that this hurricane season will be 60% worse than average, which can also temporarily affect gas prices. If one is traveling by car, AAA recommends bringing an emergency kit and getting any necessary maintenance done beforehand.
The top domestic destination this year is Orlando, Florida, which AAA says is due to its resorts and attractions. The press release also lists New York and Boston as top destinations due to their highly anticipated fireworks shows.
About 85% of the population that will be traveling will be doing so by car. Air travel will also be at an all-time high, with 5.76 million passengers traveling throughout the week.

Vice President of AAA Travel Stacey Barber highlighted the advantage of July 4 falling on a Friday.
“Following Memorial Day’s record forecast, AAA is seeing strong demand for road trips and air travel over Independence Day week,” Barber said. “With the holiday falling on a Friday, travelers have the option of making it a long weekend or taking the entire week to make memories with family and friends.”
