The U.S. Transportation Security Administration reported that Friday was the new record of travelers in a single day, with 2.95 million screened.
Already Thursday, some 2,897,417 passed through TSA checkpoints ahead of the Memorial Day holiday weekend, the second-most travelers reported before Friday broke the record. Five out of the last ten busiest travel days have happened since May 16.
Richmond International Airport in Virginia set the record for the most passengers ever in a single day with 9,857 screened Thursday. The airport has two security checkpoints and is over 100 miles south of the U.S. Capitol.
United Airlines is expecting a 10% increase in passengers this weekend, and Delta expects to see an increase of 5%. Even American Airlines anticipates 10% more passengers immediately following its $312 million loss in the first quarter of 2024. The company blamed “air traffic control challenges and significant weather events” for the loss.
Meanwhile, Southwest Airlines is experiencing similar shortfalls as it plans to shut down routes at four airports and lay off 2,000 employees. JetBlue Airlines is also cutting some of its routes this summer.

The last record came during the Thanksgiving holiday, with 30 million traveling across three days and 2.91 million traveling on Sunday. Travel has been back to pre-pandemic levels ever since 2022 when TSA officers screened 2,490,490 people ahead of the Fourth of July weekend.
These numbers are counted at the 440 federalized airports where TSA is stationed. The administration currently has over 50,000 officers who received a 30% pay raise last year.
