With the indictment on Friday, Menendez is facing corruption charges for the second time in his Senate career after he was indicted in 2015. His 2015 indictment ended in a mistrial three years later, when the jury failed to reach a verdict in the case.
Menendez has served as a senator from the Garden State since 2006 and will be up for reelection in 2024. The senator's last election, in 2018, came shortly after his corruption charges from 2015 were dropped.
