House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jamie Raskin (D-MD) is asking FBI Director Kash Patel to investigate President Donald Trump‘s nominee for U.S. attorney in D.C., Ed Martin, after he failed to disclose more than 150 Russian media appearances.

Raskin called on the FBI director to open the investigation after the Washington Post reported last week that Martin did not detail that he appeared in RT, formerly Russia Today, and Sputnik more than 150 times between 2016 and 2024 in required paperwork for the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Martin, who is currently serving as the interim U.S. attorney, only disclosed 16 appearances during that same period, disclaiming, “despite my searches, there may be other materials that I have been unable to identify, find, or remember.”

DC US ATTORNEY ED MARTIN FACES SCRUTINY OVER UNDECLARED STATE MEDIA APPEARANCES

“The Congress of the United States and the American people deserve a full picture of Mr. Martin, his relationships to Russia, and his political loyalties,” Raskin wrote in the letter

“We have observed in shock as Mr. Martin has used his interim role as U.S. Attorney to threaten enemies of Elon Musk and pledge allegiance to the corrupt billionaire, publicly attack and threaten Democratic lawmakers for engaging in protected speech critical of the Trump Administration, categorically fire dedicated career civil servants for having prosecuted violent January 6th crimes, and refuse to recuse himself from clear conflicts of interest,” he continued.

In 2021, Martin participated in over 60 interviews to discuss the prosecutions of Jan. 6 Capitol rioters. Many of his appearances were unrelated to Russia or Ukraine, but he did urge against a U.S. intervention in Syria and dismissed speculations that Russia would invade Ukraine in February 2022. Although his appearances scaled back after the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022, the letter states, “just 16 days after Russia invaded Ukraine, Mr. Martin suggested Vladimir Putin might be a ‘hero.'”

Despite the appearances, the White House has stood behind Martin, calling him the “perfect leader to restore law and order,” in a statement to the Washington Post.

WHO IS ED MARTIN, DC’S NEW US ATTORNEY WHO SAYS HE’S ONE OF ‘TRUMP’S LAWYERS’?

“President Trump made a brilliant choice in selecting Ed Martin to serve a full, permanent term as United States Attorney for the District of Columbia. With a distinguished record of service, Ed is the perfect leader to restore law and order and make our Nation’s Capital safe and beautiful once again,” a White House official told the outlet when asked about Martin’s appearances.

Raskin, a graduate of Harvard Law, has been heavily involved in the judiciary throughout his time in Congress, notably serving on the Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. The letter to Patel is Raskin’s latest effort to push back on Trump’s agenda.

In his letter, Raskin pointed out that only three of about 80 nominees from 2021 through 2014 failed to disclose statements or writings for the committee, stating these three did not leave out more than four items.

The ranking member noted that both networks Martin appeared on served as “‘critical elements’ in Moscow’s propaganda and disinformation efforts,” which have been a focus of administrations on both sides of the aisle. These media outlets have been required by the Department of Justice to register as “foreign agents.”

Nomination hearings are not common for U.S. Attorneys. However, Democrats have been pushing for a hearing and floor vote on Martin’s nomination.

“I understand that Chairman Grassley has submitted questions to Mr. Martin in response to the issues that Committee Democrats and I raised with respect to Mr. Martin’s record, and Mr. Martin will submit responses to our written questions during this April recess,” Senate Judiciary Ranking Member Dick Durbin wrote in a statement last week. “However, today’s reporting is further evidence that the Committee must hold a hearing and hear from Ed Martin directly, under oath. We must take our constitutional duty of advice and consent seriously.”

The FBI told the Washington Examiner they received the letter but do not have further comment. The Washington Examiner reached out to Martin for comment.
