The leading Republican and Democrat on the House Oversight Committee joked about the wonders of bipartisanship after Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle announced her resignation following bipartisan backlash.

Cheatle resigned less than two weeks after a failed assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump and the aftermath that left members of Congress from both sides of the aisle demanding she step down.

Shortly after the news broke, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) put a hearing on prescription drug markets in recess Tuesday morning and announced to the committee that Cheatle had resigned, to which Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) responded by applauding the hearing of the committee on Monday, when members of Congress grilled her.

“Well done, Mr. Chairman, that was a great hearing,” Raskin said, after which Comer referred to a joint letter between the two of them calling on Cheatle to resign.

“Maybe you could sign more letters with me, there’s no telling what we could do,” Comer responded.

Raskin jokingly added that “bipartisanship may be the wave of the future,” before Comer gaveled the hearing into recess.

Pressure had mounted in recent days for Cheatle to resign after more details about the agency’s security failings in protecting Trump during his July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, became apparent. One rally attendee, Corey Comperatore, 50, was killed in the shooting, while Trump and two others were injured.

Comer and Raskin signed a joint letter Monday afternoon, calling on Cheatle to resign after she “failed to provide answers to basic questions” regarding the assassination attempt.

The letter was a rare moment of bipartisanship in a committee that has featured tempers flaring between Democrats and Republicans several times during the 118th Congress.
