NextImg:Ranked choice voting is a bad idea

The new election fad sweeping the Left is ranked choice voting. Instead of picking one candidate, voters rank candidates as the first, second, third choice, and so on.

If no candidate gets 50% according to voters' first choice, then voters' second choice is taken into account to decide the winner. For example, pretend one candidate receives 42% of the vote, another gets 41%, and a third candidate gets the rest. No one reaches 50%-plus one according to voters’ first choice. So the third candidate’s votes are thrown out. It is a confusing system designed to help some politicians at the expense of others.

KAYLEE MCGHEE: 'ELITIST' MAINSTREAM MEDIA TALKS DOWN TO VOTERS

Don’t believe me? This motivation is on pure display in a Washington Post piece that asks whether ranked choice voting helps or hurts former President Donald Trump . Some want to use the ranked choice system to keep Trump from securing the GOP nomination. This is a problem. Elites should not be manipulating an election process to favor their preferred candidates.

Another example of the concerns involved here comes from Alaska. That state passed a ballot measure to enact ranked choice voting. Project Veritas then caught the incumbent Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s (R-AK) campaign staff taking credit for changing to ranked choice voting to help her reelection. Josiah Nash, Murkowski’s campaign interior coordinator, was recorded saying, "Between you and me, Ballot Measure 2 was actually created — I think it was created for two reasons. Number one, it was created because there were people in this state who wanted to see a better system, but they also wanted Lisa to get reelected." The senator’s campaign coordinator, Emma Ashlock, said, "While we were working on Ballot Measure 2 and voting for Ballot Measure 2, we had Sen. Murkowski in mind the whole time."

Put simply, ranked choice voting was put in place to help Murkowski win. But when politicians seek to change the election process to favor their own reelection, it taints the entire process.

America is supposed to let the people vote in an actual election between candidates. Ranked choice voting disenfranchises voters from participating in the actual election between two candidates. So let’s stop trying to rig the process and just let the voters go vote like they always have — by picking one candidate for each political office.

Another concern: voter confusion. In California, one county announced that a programming error led to a miscount across all ranked choice contests, including a race in which an Oakland school board candidate was wrongly declared the winner.

We don’t need to change the way people vote.

What we need to do is ensure that all the rules are followed. We need clean voter rolls. We need to ensure that only citizens are voting in our elections. Ranked choice voting is most definitely not the way to go.
