The president of the country's largest teachers union joined a protest outside the Supreme Court on Tuesday, saying the reality of student debt is unfair.

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, attended a Student Debt Crisis Center's rally on Tuesday in response to the court considering challenges to President Joe Biden's $10,000 forgiveness plan for people making less than $125,000 per year or households earning less than $250,000 annually.

Weingarten broke down during her speech, comparing the debt forgiveness plan to grants aiding small businesses due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"And frankly, and this is what really pisses me off," Weingarten said. "During the pandemic, we understood that small businesses were hurting, and we helped them, and it didn’t go to the Supreme Court to challenge it. Big businesses were hurting, and we helped them, and it didn't go to the Supreme Court to challenge it."

"All of a sudden, when it’s about our students, they challenge it, the corporations challenge it, the student loan lenders challenge it," she continued. "That is not right, that is not fair, and that is what we are fighting as well when we say cancel student debt. This is about the people, and it is about the people's future, and it is about all of your futures."

Her outburst drew severe criticism on social media from conservative commentators, writers, and actors, who called her "crazy" and "horrible."

"When they have nothing solid to stand on, they just shout and bully, hoping you'll give them what they want to stop the hysteria," conservative writer Chad Felix Greene tweeted.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) tweeted, "Bless her heart," in response to Weingarten's comments.

Weingarten has received criticism for her support of schools closing down and switching to online learning during the coronavirus pandemic. In May 2022, she switched her stance and cited the negative effects school closures had on children.

"Our kids are in crisis," she had said. "And we had a mental health crisis before COVID … but for two years of disruption, two years of looking at the screens, two years of not having a normal kind of routine and rhythm, recovery is really tough."

The Supreme Court is hearing two cases, Department of Education v. Brown and Biden v. Nebraska, that will determine whether the student debt forgiveness plan is legal.

Democrats have pushed back against Republicans calling for the plan to be struck down, stating that Biden has the authority to cancel school debt under his scope as president.

“It is exactly what Donald Trump did. He canceled billions of dollars of interest payments that were coming due,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) said. “And not one Republican, not one, raised an objection."
