Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) signaled Tuesday that four Republican senators will be working to improve what he referred to as the current “weak” and “anemic” spending cuts to the Big, Beautiful Bill Act.

Paul is not the only critic of the tax legislation. Republican senators have scrutinized it for costing some $400 billion in tax cuts. Sens. Mike Lee (R-UT), Ron Johnson (R-WI), and Rick Scott (R-FL) also oppose it as it was passed in the House.

“The spending cuts are weak, they’re anemic, and they need to do more. Nothing in the bill changes the course of the accumulation of debt,” Paul said Tuesday on CNBC’s SquawkBox. “We’re accumulating about $2 trillion in debt every year. That’s ongoing, and the bill will not materially change the direction of the accumulation of debt.”

The Big, Beautiful Bill Act centers on mandatory government spending. The possible rescissions bill would cut discretionary spending.

The Kentucky senator suggested that “all it takes is those four” aforementioned senators to push for change to the bill, as the Republican Party has a four-seat majority in the chamber.

“Those four can dramatically change the bill. And I think there’s more courage on the Right, frankly, than there is on the Left of the Republican caucus,” Paul said. “I think that if the conservatives will hold strong, the bill could be materially changed for the better, and that means adding in more spending cuts.”

President Donald Trump is pressuring the chamber to pass the bill before the recess, which is scheduled for the week of the Fourth of July.

Paul has stood firm on his stance despite criticism from Trump. In a Truth Social post, Trump claimed, “Rand votes NO on everything, but never has any practical or constructive ideas.”

THUNE RUNS INTO ‘BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL’ TIME CRUNCH AHEAD OF JULY 4 DEADLINE

Paul said when it comes to the Big Beautiful Bill Act, he wants to vote for it.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) advised the Senate to “fine-tune this product as little as possible.” However, Trump has recommended Senate Republicans do the opposite, saying, “I want the Senate and the senators to make the changes they want.” Paul predicted that alterations could be made up to the minute before the Senate votes on the legislation, which is expected toward the end of the week.
