Qualcomm President and CEO Cristiano Amon announced Wednesday that his company will have devices operating on 6G internet by 2028.

These devices will be “pre-commercial,” and it remains to be seen when they will become available for purchase.

Amon made the announcement at the Snapdragon Summit, named after Qualcomm’s integrated circuit products, which at the moment is only available on Android devices.

“If you don’t have a Snapdragon-powered phone right now — if you don’t have, for example, the great galaxy phone and you still are using the other phone, you don’t know what’s happening,” Amon said. “There’s a lot of innovation happening.”

According to Amon, 6G will allow for other smart devices to connect to the internet without being connected to a smartphone. This would pave the way for augmented reality products to function out in the world.

“We are moving from a smartphone-centric environment,” Amon said. “Those devices — whether it is a smartwatch, an earbud, a glass — they are no longer just doing the job of extending the functionality of the phone, but they are actually engaging directly with the agent.”

“We are thinking about the next generation of connectivity, which is coming. Which is 6G, it is designed to be the connection between the cloud and the edge devices,” Amon added.

The Snapdragon Summit will continue through Thursday. It is expected to unveil the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset for smartphones.
