The left-wing idea of working around the Constitution by declaring gun violence a “public health” crisis is taking root in President Joe Biden’s White House.

“For too long, this issue has been mired in polarization and politics, but our goal, my goal, is to take this issue out of the realm of politics and put it into the realm of public health, which is where it belongs,” said Surgeon General Vivek Murthy of gun violence and gun policy Tuesday.

Translation: We want to take this matter out of the hands of voters and that pesky political process and put it in the hands of public health bureaucrats who work for Biden.

It isn’t hard to see why this has been a pet cause for some on the gun-grabbing Left. Democrats have consistently lost on the gun matter, even before the pandemic and crime wave in 2020 led to record first-time gun buyers. Democrats can’t run an end-around against the Second Amendment and the Supreme Court when it comes to their unconstitutional gun control proposals, so they would rather try to find a way to bureaucratize the problem and try to use loose interpretations of public health laws to impose their agenda.

That is what this will be, lest you be swayed by the appeal to public health “expertise” that will no doubt flood this topic. Murthy is already speaking with the same tone of moral shaming as your run-of-the-mill gun control activist, saying in an advisory that “our failure to address” gun violence as a public health crisis “is a moral crisis.” As for the sacred word of Murthy on public health concerns, he was one of many health bureaucrats who pushed social distancing policies that were used to shut down schools and businesses, despite Dr. Anthony Fauci recently admitting that guidance had no scientific basis whatsoever.

Surely, though, Murthy will be an unbiased, purely science-based arbiter for this matter on which he is already adopting gun control activist rhetoric, right?

Democrats cannot win the gun control argument on merits. They can’t win it with voters, and they can’t win against the Constitution and the Supreme Court. They are left with tricks such as this, masking gun control as a “public health” matter and hoping to use COVID-19-level public health restrictions to impose their will without voters getting a say. That is exactly what Murthy is trying to establish here, and that is where the gun control movement wants to go next.
