The CEO of an electric bus manufacturer that filed for bankruptcy over the summer continues to be a top member of the White House trade council that President Joe Biden relies on for advice on international trade.

Gareth Joyce, the CEO of Proterra, is among 27 people listed by the ITA as council members. He has retained his seat on the President's Export Council despite his company (which received millions in federal aid) filing for bankruptcy in August.

BIDEN CLOSED Q3 WITH MORE CASH ON HAND THAN ENTIRE GOP FIELD

Under the International Trade Administration, the group "advises the President of government policies and programs that affect U.S. trade performance; promotes export expansion; and provides a forum for discussing and resolving trade-related problems among the business, industrial, agricultural, labor, and government sectors."

The ITA did not provide comment to the Washington Examiner regarding Joyce's status on the council. However, he remains listed on the website.

Many were left shocked in August when Proterra, which operates out of California, filed for bankruptcy.

“While our best-in-class EV and battery technologies have set an industry standard, we have faced various market and macroeconomic head winds, that have impacted our ability to efficiently scale all of our opportunities simultaneously,” Joyce announced at the time.

Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) brought attention to Joyce's seat on the council last week, penning a letter to the Biden administration requesting his removal.

"It appears that by retaining Joyce, you are continuing to play political favorites with a company your administration has systematically promoted time and again since you took office. During a virtual tour of Proterra’s electric battery facility just two years ago, you pointedly highlighted the company’s potential, saying that Proterra would help the United States 'own the future,'" he wrote.

This comes as the Biden administration continues its concerted effort to increase the share of electric vehicles in the U.S., thereby decreasing the country's reliance on fossil fuels and the traditional internal combustion engine. Biden has made his stated goal to have half of new vehicle sales be electric by the year 2030.

Last year, the share of new vehicles sold in the U.S. that were electric was 5.8%. While nowhere near his goal, the number is an improvement over the prior year's 3.2%.
