Employees across multiple federal departments were ordered to remove preferred pronouns from their email signatures by Friday afternoon following changes as a result of two gender and diversity, equity, and inclusion executive orders signed by President Donald Trump.

An internal memo obtained by multiple news sources sent Friday morning by Jason Bonander, the Chief Information Officer at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told employees at the public health agency that “pronouns and any other information not permitted in the policy must be removed.”

Similar directives were sent to employees at the Departments of Transportation and Energy.

The onslaught of first day executive orders from the new president included one measure that officially set the policy of the federal government to only recognize two biological sexes, as opposed to subjective gender identity.

The order, with the stated goal of “restoring biological truth to the federal government,” defines biological sex based upon the production of reproductive sex cells, i.e., sperm and egg, by males and females, respectively.

Trump also ordered on Day One an end to all DEI initiatives within the federal government, saying that the diversity-promoting agenda of the last administration was “deeply unpopular, inflationary, illegal, and radical.”

“Revocations within this order will be the first of many steps the United States Federal Government will take to repair our institutions and our economy,” reads the directive signed by Trump on Jan. 20.

Putting pronouns in email signatures, resumes, and social media profiles has been a controversial topic in debates over gender identity and transgender politics, often being highly criticized as “woke” virtue signaling.

Some advocates of transgender visibility and inclusion policies have also criticized the practice of including preferred pronouns in email signatures and similar venues because it can create social pressure for trans-identified individuals who may not want to share their views on a polarizing issue.

The Departments of Energy, Transportation, and Health and Human Services did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
