A number of pro-Palestinian protesters were apprehended by U.S. Capitol Police officers as they staged a protest inside one of the House office buildings just one day before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is slated to address Congress.

Protesters gathered in the rotunda of the Cannon Office Building on Tuesday afternoon, their chants, echoing throughout the building, heard from several floors away. Capitol Police attempted to disperse the crowd and confiscate banners, although it was not immediately clear how many protesters were arrested.

“We are arresting a group that is illegally demonstrating inside the Cannon Rotunda. Demonstrations are not allowed inside the Congressional Buildings,” the Capitol Police said in a post on X. “We told the people, who legally entered, to stop or they would be arrested. They did not stop, so we are arresting them.”

A Capitol Police officer told the Washington Examiner that such demonstrations in the rotunda area are illegal and the protesters would likely be charged with crowding, obstructing, or incommoding a congressional office building, though no charges were immediately announced.

Protesters, wearing red T-shirts that read “Jews Say Stop Arming Israel,” sat on the floor and linked arms as they chanted “Free Palestine.”

There have been several demonstrations inside Capitol office buildings related to the war in Gaza, with protesters often urging lawmakers to call for a ceasefire. Groups have previously interrupted press conferences and other congressional hearings demanding a ceasefire in Gaza.

The Washington Examiner contacted the Capitol Police for more information.
