A portrait of Mark Esper from his time as Secretary of the Army placed in the Pentagon has been removed as of Wednesday.

Within the first weeks of the Trump administration, the Pentagon has removed two portraits of Gen. Mark Milley, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and now, one of Esper, who served as Trump’s first secretary of defense.

The portrait from his time as secretary of defense remains up as of now.

HEGSETH REMOVING MILLEY’S SECURITY DETAIL AND CLEARANCE

The Pentagon has not specified why the portraits were removed though President Donald Trump has been highly critical of both Milley and Esper, even though he appointed them to their most senior roles. It’s unclear if any other former officials’ portraits will come down.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has also revoked the security clearance and security detail provided by the previous administration to Milley. He also directed the acting Pentagon inspector general to open a review of Milley to determine whether he should get a demotion.

A Pentagon spokesperson declined to say whether Hegseth urged the IG to investigate other current or former defense officials.

Esper also has a security detail, which the Biden administration agreed to provide, for the same reason as Milley; their involvement in the 2020 airstrike that killed senior Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani. The Iranians have threatened to avenge his assassination.

Trump revoked the security details provided to several of the officials involved in the strike since reassuming the presidency more than a week ago. Esper has said in the past that he had a security detail but it’s unclear if Trump or Hegseth will pull that.
