The city of Laguna Beach, California, voted to ban balloons over concerns of ocean pollution and wildfires.

The vote took place at a city council meeting Tuesday night, and it determined that balloons will be banned from being sold or used in public spaces beginning in 2024.

Balloons are a common source of litter at beaches. The NOAA said nearly 3,000 balloon pieces were found on beaches in Virginia by cleanup crews during a four-year span. Environmentalists also have concerns about balloons getting tanged in electrical lines, potentially causing wildfires. California has frequently suffered severe droughts.

A wildfire in neighboring Laguna Niguel, California, in May 2022 destroyed 20 homes and damaged 12 others. It burned 200 acres of land. There were no reported deaths from the fires, but two firefighters were injured battling the blaze, per the city.

"Even the balloon advocates and balloon industry was not opposed to banning them on the beach," Laguna Beach Mayor Bob Whalen said. "There is going to be some impact on the local distribution of balloons, but as I say, people will still find places to buy balloons."

Penalties for violating the balloon ban vary by violation, with the first instance garnering a fine of $100, a second offense being punishable by a $200 fine, and a $500 fine for any additional infractions.
