An incident during the New York Police Department’s raid at Columbia University is under review after an officer accidentally fired his weapon.

The shot was fired when police entered Hamilton Hall, which had been taken over by pro-Palestinian protesters. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office spokesman Doug Cohen confirmed to the City in a statement that the Police Accountability Unit is investigating the incident.

It added that no one was hurt by the shot and that no students were around when it was fired.

A spokesperson for the NYPD explained that the officer who fired the shot was using the flashlight equipped on a gun to illuminate his path when he accidentally fired the weapon. The shot ricocheted off of a wall but did not harm anyone.

Videos of the Tuesday raid showed an armored vehicle lowering a drawbridge near the window of Hamilton Hall, which was then opened by riot police and entered. The police were seen in full tactical gear with riot shields, appearing to have guns drawn. Over 100 people were reportedly arrested.

In a Wednesday press conference, New York City Mayor Eric Adams heaped praise on the NYPD’s conduct during the raid, calling it “precision policing.”

Activists criticized the raid as excessive, claiming the barricaded students posed no threat to the officers. Columbia University revealed that it had called in the NYPD to intervene and had no other choice.

“We regret that protesters have chosen to escalate the situation through their actions. After the University learned overnight that Hamilton Hall had been occupied, vandalized, and blockaded, we were left with no choice,” the school said in a statement.

“We believe that the group that broke into and occupied the building is led by individuals who are not affiliated with the University,” it added.
