During an era in which mainstream society is being told to honor diversity, equity, and inclusion, it seems the only people who don’t benefit from this cultural revolution are those who are of European descent. For example, October is celebrated as Italian American Heritage and Culture Month and has been since 1989. Yet, as written previously, one would be hard-pressed to find a major corporation, network, or sports league to recognize it the way it does other months. One such megacorporation is the NFL.

Earlier in October, the NFL went out of its way to recognize National Hispanic Heritage Month. The league has shown no hesitation in celebrating other cultural and heritage months and established a precedent for doing so. However, no such thing was done to acknowledge Italian American Heritage and Culture Month. At a time when the league committed to diversity and demonstrated that everyone should have representation, this doesn’t appear to be true for Italian Americans. Arguably, not doing so should be considered an ethnic slight.

Despite the league’s exclusion and insensitivity, Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni took matters into his own hands and wore the Italian flag on the sleeve of his shirt and the side of his visor during Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders. Unfortunately, it appears the NFL still doesn't acknowledge Italian American Heritage and Culture Month and that Sirianni was wearing the Italian flag because of its initiative to celebrate "international diversity." Nevertheless, it was a pleasant surprise to see as Italian American Heritage and Culture Month comes to an end.

Italian Americans comprise less than 5% of the U.S. population, according to the most recent census. While there does not appear to be any available data to determine how many Italian American players are in the NFL, they are a minority in the league. The percentage seems even lower among the league’s current head coaches. For over 30 years, October has been designated as the month to celebrate Italian Americans. The NFL should ensure it treats Italian American Heritage and Culture Month as it does all the other cultural months it celebrates. If it needs any help, contact Nick Sirianni.
