Tech billionaire Peter Thiel voiced his support for Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) if he can make it to the general election in 2024 but cautioned him not to lean too hard into the culture wars should he launch a presidential bid.
"I think DeSantis would make a terrific president if he's the Republican nominee. I will strongly support him in 2024," Thiel said this week on the Honestly with Bari Weiss podcast. "But I do worry that focusing on the woke issue as ground zero is not quite enough."
TRUMP'S MAIN 2024 GOP PRIMARY OPPONENT COULD BE TRUMP FATIGUE
"The focus on identity politics, on the woke religion, is probably a distraction from stagnation. It's a distraction from economics," he added.
DeSantis has made opposing "wokeness" a major part of his combative persona and has frequently said that Florida is where "wokeness goes to die." On Wednesday, the Sunshine State's legislature passed two bills, the first banning teachers from addressing transgender students by their preferred pronouns and the second barring funding for diversity programs in colleges. DeSantis is expected to sign the measures.
The Florida governor has not jumped into the 2024 race, but he is widely expected to challenge former President Donald Trump for the nomination, with a campaign launch in June.
Thiel financially supported Trump during his first presidential run and was a Trump delegate in 2016. He backed several Senate candidates during last year's midterm elections, including J.D. Vance (R-OH), who won his Senate campaign, and Blake Masters, who lost his.

Late last month, Reuters reported Thiel wouldn't fund any 2024 presidential candidates.
DeSantis remains Trump's closest competitor in the forming GOP primary. Both Trump and DeSantis consistently lead any other 2024 hopefuls in polling.
