


The Department of Defense identified probationary employees and provided that list to the Department of Government Efficiency, which is set to audit the department’s spending.
In the first month of the Trump administration, DOGE has already worked its way through multiple government agencies, resulting in the firings of federal employees, and more are presumed to be on the horizon.
DoD “identified probationary employees to let go and sent [it] to [the Office of Personnel Management], a spokesperson for the OPM confirmed to the Washington Examiner.
The Pentagon may exempt certain probationary officials who are deemed to be mission-critical.
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has previously expressed his support for DOGE to come into the Pentagon and review its spending. He said on social media earlier this month that he’s “looking forward to working with” President Donald Trump and Elon Musk “to cut the fat (HQ) and grow the muscle (warfighters).”
DOGE reportedly fired more than 300 employees at the National Nuclear Security Administration last week only to try to halt their dismissal this week due to their work on nuclear weapons programs.

The Pentagon’s budget is just shy of $900 billion. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle agree that there is likely wasteful spending that could be cut from DoD’s budget, though it’s unclear what DOGE will target.
