The Department of Justice will not bring charges against former Vice President Mike Pence for classified documents found in his Indiana home earlier this year.
The Justice Department closed its investigation into the possible mishandling of classified documents, saying "no criminal charges will be sought,” according to a letter from DOJ obtained by CNN.
ONE QUESTION FOR TRUMP COULD DETERMINE THE RACE FOR THE 2024 GOP NOMINATION
“The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department’s National Security Division have conducted an investigation into the potential mishandling of classified information,” the Justice Department wrote to Pence’s lawyer.
Pence requested his lawyers search his home in Carmel, Indiana, following the discovery of classified materials at President Joe Biden’s Delaware home, which the Justice Department is investigating.
Pence turned over the classified records to the FBI, and the Justice Department’s National Security Division launched an investigation into the origins of about a dozen classified documents and how they settled into Pence’s home.
Officials searched the potential 2024 Republican candidate's Washington, D.C., office, finding no classified documents in February.
“The vice president has consistently cooperated with appropriate authorities, has been fully transparent, and looks forward to the imminent conclusion of this matter,” Pence aide Devin O’Malley told the Washington Post following the search.
Pence addressed the investigation at Florida International University in Miami in late January, saying he takes "full responsibility."
"Those classified documents should not have been in my personal residence, mistakes were made," Pence told the crowd.
Former President Donald Trump has been the subject of an investigation into hundreds of classified documents found at his Mar-a-Lago residence last year.
