Former Vice President Mike Pence called for the swift execution of mass shooters.

In a speech at this year's National Rifle Association conference, Pence spoke against gun control and defended the right to bear arms. Touching on the subject of mass shootings, Pence urged better security in schools while advocating capital punishment for mass shooters.

“I’m tired of the senseless violence and loss of life that could be prevented if our leaders would support law enforcement, protect our schools, institutionalize the obviously mentally ill, and enact legislation that would ensure that anyone who engages in these heinous acts of mass violence meets their fate in months, not years,” Pence said.

"Too many mass shooters languish in prison for years," he continued.

"Men and women, I don't have to tell you; justice delayed is justice denied. It's inconceivable to me that the shooter who killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018 is languishing in a Florida prison. I believe the time has come to institute a federal death penalty statute with accelerated appeal to ensure that those who engage in mass shootings face execution in months, not years."

Pence is widely expected to run for president in 2024. A run would put him at odds with his former boss, former President Donald Trump. The two had a falling out after the Jan. 6 riot.

Trump is also slated to give a speech at the conference on Friday.
