Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-CA), a close ally of Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), became the latest member of Congress on Tuesday to announce her intention not to seek reelection in 2024.

"I'm choosing this beautiful season of thanksgiving to announce that I will not seek reelection," Eshoo, 80, said in a video posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. "And I do so with a heart filled with unending gratitude to you, my magnificent constituents."

"I'm very proud of the body of bipartisan work I've been able to achieve on your behalf in the Congress," she added.

The 16th Congressional District she represents includes Silicon Valley, which she claimed is "the most distinguished congressional district in our country." Her district consistently ranks among the best educated in the country.

Eshoo, who was first elected in 1992, is the only Armenian American and only Assyrian American in Congress, which both Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA) noted in their statements thanking her for her years of public service.

"Anna has been a personal mentor and source of encouragement and inspiration throughout my journey in Congress and I wish her and her family the best in this new chapter at the conclusion of a historic Congressional career," said Jeffries.

The congresswoman's retirement also set a record, making November 2023 the month with the most congressional retirees since Ballotpedia began tracking in 2011. The previous record was January 2014, with 10. Those 10 retirements had followed the October 2013 government shutdown.

The explosion in congressional retirements this month comes after representatives endured an extensive speaker election following Rep. Kevin McCarthy's (R-CA) ouster in October, as well as two averted government shutdowns.
