Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton threatened to take action against YouTube on Tuesday if the video platform removes Univision from its base streaming plan in a move that would effectively charge YouTube TV subscribers $15 extra per month for access to the Spanish-language programming.

YouTube is set to make the change on Tuesday, affecting more than 10 million subscribers who listen to Univision, Telemundo, and NBCUniversal.

The Republican attorney general believes YouTube, owned by Google, is retaliating against Univision for promoting viewpoint diversity.

“In a time where political violence is at its highest point in decades, during the 2024 campaign season, Univision was one of the only platforms to host a Town Hall for then-candidate Donald Trump,” Paxton wrote in a letter to YouTube CEO Neal Mohan and Google CEO Sundar Pichai. “That was a laudable decision, and to the extent that YouTube TV is now using market power to punish it, such retaliation will not be tolerated.”

Univision hosted town halls with both President Donald Trump and former Vice President Kamala Harris during the 2024 election cycle for its Hispanic audience.

The network plans to televise town halls with New Jersey’s gubernatorial candidates next week. TelevisaUnivision CEO Daniel Alegre said Google’s decision to put his network in a more expensive streaming package may affect the outcome of the state election, which will likely be determined by Hispanic voters.

“If you shut that off, all of New Jersey or the metropolitan area of New York are not going to be able to hear from” Republican Jack Ciattarelli or Democrat Mikie Sherill in the race, Alegre told Florida’s Voice.

Meanwhile, Paxton wonders whether YouTube is engaging in “consumer deception” in Texas.

“If it is true that YouTube TV plans to remove Univision from its base-level streaming package, I urge you to re-consider,” he said. “I will not permit a California media giant to take advantage of Texans and, at the same time, destroy a network that has committed itself to the promotion of diverse viewpoints.”

Other Republican officials, including Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares and Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH), have submitted their own inquiries about the tech giant’s move against Univision.

GOOGLE VOWS TO RESTORE YOUTUBE CONTENT CREATORS BANNED OVER POLITICAL SPEECH

Paxton’s letter comes after YouTube notably let conservative content creators back onto the platform after they were previously banned for violating its past political speech policies by speaking on contentious topics, such as the COVID-19 pandemic or the 2020 election.

YouTube also agreed to settle a lawsuit with Trump for $24 million over its prior ban of the president’s account after the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021, when censoring conservatives was a more common trend. Monday’s settlement made YouTube one of the latest media companies to settle legal disputes with Trump, followed by Paramount and ABC.
