At least two dozen United States military personnel were hurt in drone attacks on American bases in Syria and Iraq last week, U.S. Central Command said Tuesday.

Twenty of the injuries occurred during a wave of two drone attacks in Syria, and the U.S. successfully took down one of the drones. Later that same day, four others were injured in two separate drone attacks against U.S. and coalition forces stationed at the al Asad base in western Iraq, CENTCOM told NBC News.

The attacks in Iraq were first reported by CENTCOM last week, but the release did not specify how many people had been injured. The U.S. had shot down the attack drones in Iraq, but the debris from one destroyed a hanger that contained a small aircraft, CENTCOM said. All of the injured in Syria and Iraq could return to their duties the same day.

Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, the Pentagon press secretary, said that the groups conducting the attacks are supported by the Iranian regime. The comment came during the question and answer section of a press briefing Tuesday.

"What we are seeing is the prospect for more significant escalation against U.S. forces and personnel across the region in the very near term coming from Iranian proxy forces, and ultimately from Iran," Ryder told reporters. "We always reserve the right to defend ourselves, and we will never hesitate to take action when needed to protect our forces and our interests overseas."

Ryder also said there were at least 13 attacks against U.S. and coalition forces in Iraq and Syria from Oct. 17-24. No complete injury count has been reported so far.

The attacks come as tensions continue to increase in various parts of the Middle East over a war between Israel and the terrorist organization Hamas, which launched a surprise attack against Israel on Oct. 7. At least 6,000 people total have been killed in the conflict, according to the Associated Press.

The State Department put out a worldwide travel caution last week for Americans looking to travel overseas for the holidays, citing "increased tensions in various locations around the world." Americans who travel overseas are encouraged to "stay alert in locations frequented by tourists" and enroll in the department's safety program to receive information and alerts that make it easier to be located in emergencies.

The Washington Examiner reached out to CENTCOM for comment.
