ChatGPT developer OpenAI is expanding its product's functionalities to keep it ahead of the competition, including the ability to speak with users and have a conversation.
The company announced on Monday that it was updating its iOS and Android apps so that the artificial intelligence-powered product can speak directly to users. The product will be able to speak out loud in five different voices in a similar way that Siri or Alexa operates, but it will sound far more human than its predecessors.

"You can now use voice to engage in a back-and-forth conversation with your assistant," OpenAI wrote in a blog post. "Speak with it on the go, request a bedtime story for your family, or settle a dinner table debate."

The company collaborated with five voice actors to generate the voices used by ChatGPT to create its responses. The conversations are slower than a normal conversation, according to preliminary tests by the Wall Street Journal. But they appear to sound more natural than other chatbots.
The feature will only be available for ChatGPT's paid users in the next two weeks. The rest of ChatGPT's users will get the new feature "soon after," according to the developer.

OpenAI has given it a voice and, yes, it sounds eerily like a real human.

The company also added optical functions in which a user can send the bot pictures and it offers answers based on what it sees. For example, a user could take a picture of ingredients and ChatGPT would offer a recipe suggestion, or the user could scan a damaged item in the house and the bot would offer a series of steps to fix it. Google previously experimented with this function by allowing users to search for answers through Google Lens.
Spotify also announced on Monday that it had partnered with OpenAI to translate podcast episodes into different languages using the voice of the podcaster. The product is limited to only a small number of podcasters, including Dax Shepard, Monica Padman, Lex Fridman, Bill Simmons, and Steven Bartlett.

“By matching the creator’s own voice, Voice Translation gives listeners around the world the power to discover and be inspired by new podcasters in a more authentic way than ever before,” Ziad Sultan, Spotify’s vice president of personalization, said in a statement. The company intends to expand the function to a number of other podcasts in the future.
The new features were launched less than a week after a group of bestselling authors sued OpenAI for training ChatGPT on their texts without seeking their approval or providing them with appropriate payments.
