President Joe Biden spent a portion of his time in Poland overseeing the federal response to the toxic train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio.
Biden, who is in Eastern Europe to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the war in Ukraine, spoke Tuesday night with Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan regarding EPA's "latest actions to hold Norfolk Southern accountable, in addition to receiving an update on the situation on the ground in East Palestine."

White House officials say Biden also gave updates on the federal response to Gov. Mike DeWine (R-OH), Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Rep. Bill Johnson (R-OH), and Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA).
The EPA announced Tuesday night that Norfolk Southern would foot the entire bill for the cleanup effort and disposal of any remaining hazardous materials.
"This is common sense. This is their mess. They should clean it up," the president wrote.
After my speech today, I spoke with @EPAMichaelRegan, @SenSherrodBrown, @RepBillJohnson, @GovernorShapiro and @GovMikeDeWine about our ongoing efforts in East Palestine, OH.

"For years, elected officials — including the last admin — have limited our ability to implement and strengthen rail safety measures. Heck, many of the elected officials pointing fingers right now want to dismantle the EPA — the agency that is making sure this clean up happens," Biden continued. "Rail companies have spent millions of dollars to oppose common-sense safety regulations. And it’s worked. This is more than a train derailment or a toxic waste spill — it’s years of opposition to safety measures coming home to roost. We'll continue to hold rail companies accountable when they fail to put safety first. But first, we’ve got Norfolk Southern’s mess to clean. I want affected residents to know that we’ve got your back. And as I said to your govs, they'll have every resource that they need."
Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg also announced several steps Tuesday night to prevent similar future derailments.

Biden and Buttigieg have been criticized recently for failing to visit East Palestine, Ohio. Prior to the president's European trip, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed that there was no current plan to have Biden survey the damage and visit with residents.
Former President Donald Trump, Biden's chief political rival, announced that he would visit East Palestine Wednesday, where he will be joined by Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), East Palestine Mayor Trent Conaway, Johnson, and others.
