An Ohio county judge upheld the state’s law banning transgender surgery and similar treatments for people under the age of 18 on Wednesday, months after the state legislature enacted the law despite a veto from Gov. Mike DeWine (R-OH).

Franklin County Judge Michael Holbrook issued the ruling, finding that the law “reasonably limits parents’ rights to make decisions about their children’s medical care consistent with the State’s deeply rooted legitimate interest in the regulation of medical profession and medical treatments.”

Attorney General Dave Yost applauded the ruling in a statement through a spokesperson Wednesday. The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio, which helped file the lawsuit, said it would be appealing the ruling “immediately,” with the court docket showing a notice of appeal has been filed.
