The National Republican Senatorial Committee debuted an attack ad on Monday, targeting Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) after recent polling suggested the latter posed more of a threat to the Republican candidate in 2024.

The 30-second ad blasted "rotten Ruben Gallego," who it said "abandoned his wife when she was nearly nine months pregnant, then married a D.C. lobbyist."

Such an attack could be risky for the committee, as Gallego is a former U.S. Marine and a veteran of the Iraq War and has blamed the end of his first marriage on mental struggles following his deployment. Politico reported he and his ex-wife Kate Gallego are now "good friends," according to a person close to the congressman. He has also been pictured with his 6-year-old son in Congress and on the campaign trail as recently as last month.

While denigrating the Arizona congressman, “A Choice” ties Sinema, a Democrat-turned-independent, to President Joe Biden and his agenda.

"Sinema voted for President Biden's agenda 100% of the time, backed Biden's green energy bill, even helped pass Biden's American Rescue Plan," it said.

The ad comes after polling of the Arizona Senate race showed Sinema's candidacy hurting Republican candidate Kari Lake more than Gallego in 2024. Sinema has not announced if she will run for reelection.

"Deadbeat dad or liberal Democrat? Arizonans deserve a better choice," the ad concluded.

“National Democrats are fighting a lose-lose civil war over who they'll make their standard-bearer: Rotten Ruben Gallego or liberal rubber-stamp Kyrsten Sinema. Arizonans deserve better,” NRSC spokesman Tate Mitchell said in a statement.

Arizona's Senate race is one of the largest pickup opportunities for Republicans in 2024 and could also decide which party controls the upper chamber. Sinema's seat is rated a "toss-up," according to the Cook Political Report.
