John Lansing, the president and CEO of NPR, will retire from his position by the end of 2023, marking an end to his four years in the position.

The National Public Radio organization's board will search for a successor to Lansing before he retires. In announcing his retirement from NPR, Lansing praised his employees for their "remarkable work" on covering the news in the last four years, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

"All of you — and I mean every person working in every role at every level of this company — played a role in serving our audiences and the public interest at a time of incredible need," Lansing wrote in a note to his employees. "You should all stand proud, and it has been the honor of my career to have you as colleagues.”

Lansing accepted the position of NPR CEO in October 2019, fulfilling the role held by the previous CEO Jarl Mohn. Prior to NPR, Lansing served as the CEO of the United States Agency for Global Media and began his career in media as a studio technician and cameraman for a network when he was 17 years old.

Earlier this year, in April, NPR announced that it would no longer post content to Twitter, which is now called X, after the organization's social media account was labeled as "government-funded" media. Lansing told his employees in an email that it would be "a disservice" for them to continue posting content to the platform.

In August, X lifted its "government-funded media" and "state-affiliated" labels from NPR, along with other news networks such as BBC and CBC.

Lansing said in April that NPR would not immediately return to the platform if its "government-funded media" label was removed. As of Tuesday, NPR's last post was made on April 12.
