Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) said he wants to hold Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas accountable, stating he is not going to just "give him a blank check."

Roy claimed that Mayorkas has been lying about security along the southern border and that Texas is "under assault every day." The lawmaker shared how he receives stories "all the time" of migrant children in the sex trafficking trade being held "in a stash house." Roy also explained in the interview with News Nation that six children have died from fentanyl poisoning in the school district where he resides.

REPUBLICAN DEBATE: CAN THE DEBATES HELP WINNOW THE GOP FIELD?

“What we’re talking about is saying if you want funding, do your damn job,” Roy said. "Look, the power of the purse is what the House of Representatives has. Why should I give another dollar to that smirking son of a bitch, Alejandro Mayorkas, who sat there and lied to me under oath and is lying about Border Patrol agents and is allowing Texans to die? I shouldn’t."

Roy added that he would be giving funding to DHS but would "attach strings" to the funding to tell Mayorkas to "do your job." He added that the Republican Party could not campaign on border security and then "walk away from their core responsibility" of using their "power of the purse" to force the change they want from the administration.

Earlier this month, Roy listed a number of demands in a "Dear Colleague" letter that must be met for him to support legislation funding DHS or to vote for a continuing resolution ahead of the looming Sept. 30 deadline. Those demands include measures to tighten security at the southern border, which Roy argues is a “national crisis.”

Mayorkas has been the subject of criticism among many conservatives and Republican lawmakers for his handling of the southern border, with Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) accusing him of "doing the bidding" of Mexican drug cartels.

On Aug. 16, House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green (R-TN) sent Mayorkas a letter summoning him to appear on Capitol Hill in October for a hearing on border security "with an emphasis on examining the actions and policies implemented since January 2021 and their impacts on the border and throughout the interior of the country."

House Republicans launched an investigation in June to determine whether Mayorkas neglected to carry out his duties amid the country's border crisis, in which 7 million noncitizens have attempted to enter the country unlawfully. Findings from the committee's investigation could be grounds for opening an impeachment inquiry on Mayorkas.
