North Korea welcomed international travelers for the first time in years, according to a report.

A group of people from the United Kingdom, Canada, Greece, New Zealand, France, Germany, Austria, Australia, and Italy crossed into North Korea on a five-day trip from Feb. 20 to 24, according to a tourist company.

“Since January of 2020, the country has been closed to all international tourists, and we are glad to have finally found an opening in the Rason area, in the far north of North Korea,” Koryo Tours General Manager Simon Cockerell said.

Since 2020, North Korea has been closed to international tourists due to the COVID-19 pandemic, though it did accept 880 Russian tourists last year. North Korea hasn’t accepted travelers from other countries, including China, for five years.

“North Korea has been heavily investing on tourism sites, but there have been not much domestic demand,” Lee Sangkeun, an expert at the Institute for National Security Strategy, said, according to the report. “We can assess that North Korea now wants to resume international tourism to bring in many tourists from abroad.”

According to the report, North Korea is looking to bolster its tourism industry and plans to open a tourism site in June. In the past, more than 300,000 Chinese tourists visited annually, and a return to previous levels of tourism would be a boon for the nation.
