A North Carolina House Democrat was arrested on Wednesday and charged with multiple sex crimes.

The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office charged Cecil Brockman, who represents the state’s 60th House district near Greensboro, with two counts of indecent liberties with a child and two counts of statutory rape of someone between the ages of 13 and 15.

Warrants out for Brockman allege he “unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously did commit and attempt to commit lewd and lascivious act” with a 15-year-old victim in August.

North Carolina House Speaker Destin Hall, a Republican, called the charges against Brockman “shocking and extremely serious.”

“Given the evidence that’s publicly known, he should resign immediately so these charges do not distract from the work of the North Carolina House,” he added.

Brockman was known as a moderate Democrat who occasionally joined Republicans in overriding the vetoes of Gov. Josh Stein (D-NC). He’s represented the 60th district since 2015 and turned 41 last month.

“The allegations against Rep. Brockman are serious and, if true, would disqualify him from public office,” North Carolina House Democratic Leader Robert Reives told NC Newsline in a statement. “This is a developing situation and it is important to let the legal process unfold.”

The North Carolina Democratic Party has asked Brockman publicly to resign.
