Nordstrom announced the closure of its two downtown San Francisco locations due to the "dynamics" of the city's downtown area where retail theft has ravaged storefronts.

The two locations will close their doors in the coming months at the San Francisco Centre and Market Street Rack locations, according to a report citing a memo from Chief Stores Officer Jamie Nordstrom to employees.

"We've spent more than 35 years serving customers in downtown San Francisco, building relationships with them and investing in the local community," the memo read.

"But as many of you know, the dynamics of the downtown San Francisco market have changed dramatically over the past several years, impacting customer foot traffic to our stores and our ability to operate successfully."

The Market Street Rack location will end its business operations on July 1, and the San Francisco Centre store will shut down at the end of August.

The latter is located in the Westfield mall, the owner of which, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, maintains closures such as Nordstorm underscore "the deteriorating situation in Downtown San Francisco."

"[Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield] has actively engaged with city leaders for many years to express our serious concerns, which are shared by our customers and retailers," a mall spokesperson said.

"We have urged the city to find solutions to the key issues and lack of enforcement again."

While its stores in San Francisco are closing, Nordstrom is opening at least five new stores in California, the report noted.
