The North American Aerospace Defense Command tracked four Russian military aircraft operating in Alaska’s Air Defense Identification Zone last Monday.

An ADIZ is the airspace that surrounds a country’s sovereign airspace, so Alaska’s ADIZ borders the state’s sovereign airspace. The Russian aircraft operated within Alaska’s ADIZ but did not enter the United States or Canada’s sovereign airspace. 

NORAD released a video Monday of a Russian fighter aircraft flying close to a U.S. aircraft from the incident. The video is from the U.S. aircraft that shakes as the Russian aircraft flies dangerously close by.

NORAD said Russia’s activity in Alaska’s ADIZ “occurs regularly and is not seen as a threat,” though the commander of NORAD, Gen. Gregory Guillot, said one of the Russian pilots involved in last Monday’s incident “was unsafe, unprofessional, and endangered all.”

NORAD tracked two Russian IL-38 military aircraft operating in Alaska’s ADIZ on Sept. 15 and Sept. 14. They also tracked two Russian TU-142 military aircraft operating there on Sept. 13 and two unspecified Russian aircraft in Alaska’s ADIZ on Sept. 11.
