The North American Aerospace Defense Command responded to a civilian aircraft incursion into a temporary flight-restricted zone over Lake Tahoe, where President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden were vacationing.

Two NORAD F-16 fighter aircraft and a U.S. Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin responded to the Friday morning incursion that occurred at 7:50 a.m. local time. They dispensed flares to gain the attention of the pilot of the civilian aircraft, and the NORAD aircraft escorted them out of the restricted flight zone.

"During this event, the fighter aircraft dispensed flares — that may have been visible to the public — to gain attention from the pilot. Flares were employed with the highest regard for safety of the intercepted aircraft and people on the ground," NORAD said in a statement not attributed to anyone. "The flares burn out quickly and completely and there is no danger to people on the ground when dispensed."

Additional details about the incident were not made available immediately, though NORAD said in its release that it uses “a layered defense network of radars, satellites and fighter aircraft to identify aircraft and determine the appropriate response.”

The Bidens have been at Lake Tahoe for the last week on vacation, though they did travel to Maui, Hawaii, to view the devastation from historic wildfires that destroyed thousands of homes and killed more than 110 people.
