Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is staying at the quarters of a senior Coast Guard commander after security concerns forced her out of her Navy Yard apartment.

The Washington Post reported on Friday about Noem’s accommodations, the waterfront Quarters 1 residence at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling. Noem does not pay rent there, which she chose after the Daily Mail published photos of the area near her Navy Yard residence.

DHS expressed anger at the Washington Post for reporting about the secretary’s living accommodations, which the Trump administration says are “temporary.”

“As the DHS officers Secretary Noem leads face a 1000% increase in assaults against them, the Washington Post chose to again publish where Secretary Noem is staying—endangering her security,” Assistant DHS Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told the Washington Examiner.

“It’s a shame that the media chooses sensationalism over the safety of people enforcing America’s laws to keep Americans safe,” she added.

In further comments to the Washington Post, McLaughlin said it was “sad” for a reporter to “suggest a rancher should have to pay a second rent because of a reporter’s irresponsible decisions to dox where she lives.”

“If you cannot find humanity in another human’s safety and security, I invite you to find it here,” she said, including a link to Washington National Cathedral.

McLaughlin told the Washington Examiner that Noem continues to pay rent for her Navy Yard residence and classed the prestigious Coast Guard quarters as “secure military housing.” It’s unclear how long Noem will stay there.

“Following the media’s publishing of the location of Secretary Noem’s Washington DC apartment, she has faced vicious doxing on the dark web and a surge in death threats, including from the terrorist organizations, cartels, and criminals gangs that DHS targets. Due to threats and security concerns, she has been forced to temporarily stay in secure military housing,” she said.

The Washington Post reported that Cabinet secretaries customarily pay rent when staying in military housing. The Daily Mail first reported Noem’s move to the Coast Guard residence in July.

President Donald Trump’s choice to lead the Coast Guard, Adm. Kevin E. Lunday, has yet to be nominated or confirmed by the Senate. According to the outlet, he lives in a nearby home on base.

Noem makes more than $200,000 as a Cabinet secretary and has an estimated net worth of $5 million.

Detractors of Noem’s move say it will likely displace people. Retired Coast Guard Adm. Paul Zukunft, commandant under the first Trump administration, says that Noem’s residence in one of the top four Coast Guard officials’ homes amounts to “brinkmanship of musical quarters.”

“Quarters 1 has been used exclusively by the current serving commandant since we entered into an agreement for this quarters circa 2010,” Zukunft told the outlet.

Former Obama DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson said he was concerned “about the message [Noem’s move] sends down the line in the career military community.”

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) had biting comments for Noem, saying the house is “not a vanity residence” and that Noem is “essentially taking that property from the military.”

“It’s a real insult to the brave men and women who are protecting our shores that she thinks that house belongs to her instead of to the Coast Guard,” Murphy said. Murphy is the top Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security.

The Coast Guard is the only military branch under the DHS.

NOEM CHANGES X PROFILE PHOTO TO HER ‘SOUTH PARK’ PARODY

Noem is the top border security official in the Trump administration and has faced the brunt of the attacks concerning the president’s mass deportations plan. She has also faced threats.

Last month, a Cincinnati man was arrested after threatening to kidnap and murder several federal officials, including Noem. He threatened Noem by saying he was buying a shotgun, asking, “How many of your pathetic #Gestapedos want the smoke?”
