NextImg:No, you shouldn't cut off your family over political matters

The left-wing directive to prioritize politics above everything, including your family members, is a self-destructive one that makes you emotionally and spiritually weak and makes our political environment all the more toxic.

Video clips from the Sep. 20 Teen Vogue summit of “plus-size” model Tess Holliday have been circulating online. In the clips, when Holliday is not talking about how difficult it is for her to see overweight celebrities lose weight, she discusses how she is disowning her entire family for not adopting her liberal politics. When talking about how “so many injustices are happening” in “Palestine,” Sudan, and Congo, Holliday says the following: “I literally blocked my brother yesterday, I’m not speaking to my mom, my stepmom, my dad … I’m like, ‘Who can I block next?'”

She goes on to say that this is something you learn as you get “older and more mature,” and the politically brain-rotted members of the crowd at the summit are already more mature than she was at their age.

Obviously, you should not take political advice from a fashion model, especially one comparing a war between Rwanda and Congo and war crimes in Sudan to the fictional genocide in the fictional “Palestine.” But you especially should not take that advice when she is encouraging you to cut off members of your family in favor of siloing yourself in a social media bubble full of people who do nothing but agree with you and affirm your politics and terrible life choices.

THERE ARE NO PROMISES GAVIN NEWSOM WON’T BREAK

It is not “mature” to blackball family members over fairly basic political disagreements. In fact, it is a blaring sign of immaturity to be completely unable to handle those disagreements. Holliday is acting like a child over matters she does not understand, telling her family members, who presumably love her, that they aren’t as important as her vague understanding of global affairs and the affirmation of like-minded political obsessives. Moreover, self-isolating is contributing to the toxic political environment (driven primarily by left-wing political obsessives) that is leading to acts of political violence (almost entirely coming from left-wing domestic terrorists).

Sacrificing the love and support of your family for the fleeting admiration of strangers on the internet is destroying our politics, and it will destroy your life and meaningful relationships with people who care about you if you choose to embrace it, as Holliday has. What Holliday is urging young people to do is the exact kind of toxic political directive that is making everything from politics to social isolation worse.
