NextImg:Newsom's appointment confirms that abortion is the heart of the Democratic Party

It’s normal, if mildly corrupt, for presidents to appoint their top fundraisers to ambassadorships. It’s remarkable that Democrats have transferred one of their top fundraisers to a U.S. Senate seat.

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) has announced he is appointing Laphonza Butler to fill the Senate seat left vacant by Dianne Feinstein's death. Butler is one of the leaders of the abortion lobby, and as such she is one of the leading Democratic fundraisers. She is the president of EMILY’s List, which raises money for Democratic women who defend abortion.

“Fundraising juggernaut” is a good description of EMILY’s List. In the prior presidential election, EMILY's List spent $79.6 million. It’s one of the top ideological PACs in spending and fundraising, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Its affiliated super PAC, called Women Vote!, spent another $47 million in the 2020 cycle.

But EMILY's List isn’t merely a fundraising juggernaut. The group is basically a gatekeeper for the Democratic Party. “For Democratic women,” the New York Times reported a few years back, “no endorsement is as sought after or powerful as one conferred by Emily’s List, which functions as the political equivalent of the old-fashioned ‘Good Housekeeping’ seal of approval for voters and potential donors.”

This all highlights how abortion is the sun around which the modern Democratic Party revolves. The party’s fundraising and gatekeeping are carried out by the abortion lobby.

With Butler’s appointment, two of the last three Democrats appointed to the Senate will have been plucked out of the abortion lobby: Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton in 2018 appointed Planned Parenthood lobbyist Tina Smith to replace disgraced Sen. Al Franken.

Smith, as chief lobbyist for Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, lobbied against informed consent laws and a one-day waiting period for mothers considering abortion.

When Democrats repeatedly refuse to grant that the unborn deserve any legal protection in any circumstance and at any stage of development, this is why: Their party revolves around abortion.
