


California Gov. Gavin Newsom will join at least seven Republican governors in raising the American flag full staff for President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.
The move comes as Newsom is seeking federal assistance for his state to recover from the wildfires. Trump previously threatened to withhold funding for California in the latest escalation of the pair’s water wars.
Flags at statehouses across the country and in the U.S. Capitol were ordered by President Joe Biden to fly at half-staff to honor the late President Jimmy Carter, who died on Dec. 29.

When a president dies, it is protocol for the American flag to fly at all “federal buildings, grounds, and naval vessels throughout the United States and its territories” for 30 days. This means that during Trump’s inauguration, flags would fly at half mass.
Trump took to Truth Social to share his grievances, stating that “nobody wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it.”
“The Democrats are all ‘giddy’ about our magnificent American Flag potentially being at ‘half mast’ during my Inauguration,” Trump wrote on his platform Truth Social. “They think it’s so great, and are so happy about it because, in actuality, they don’t love our Country, they only think about themselves.”
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson announced on X, that on the day of Trump’s inauguration, the flags at the Capitol will fly at full-staff “to celebrate our country coming together behind the inauguration of our 47th President, Donald Trump.”

This is breaking from precedent — when President Richard Nixon was inaugurated in 1973, the flags at the Capitol building were flown at half-staff to commemorate former President Harry Truman, who died on Dec. 26.
So far, Idaho Gov. Brad Little, North Dakota Gov. Kelly Armstrong, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said they will raise the flag to full staff on Trump’s inauguration. The following day, the flags will be lowered to half-staff.
