Gov. Gavin Newsom (D- CA) hit back at Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) Wednesday for showing support for a Republican House member's proposal to ban federal bailouts for states that give out reparations to its residents.
Newsom responded to Abbott's tweet, where the Texas governor supported both the Republican House member's proposal and also for banning federal bailouts for all states, with a graphic that showed Republican states receive more federal government funds from the government than Democrat states.

"Well, this is awkward...," Newsom tweeted, posting a graphic from MoneyGeek that estimates seven out of 10 states most dependent on federal government funds are considered red states.

Abbott also tweeted that he believes "every state must live within its means," stating that Texas has the largest budget surplus in the United States.
"Americans shouldn’t be forced to bailout states that can’t do that," said Abbott.
The Texas governor's tweet came in response to a Fox News article about Rep. Brian Babin's (R-TX) proposed bill to block federal bailouts for states and cities that enact reparations programs.

A law that bans federal bailouts of ANY state. Period.
Texas has the largest budget surplus of any government in America.
Every state must live within its means.

Last week, Babin introduced the No Bailouts for Reparations Act, which would prevent federal loans for states or local governments that carry out reparations programs.
"American taxpayers shouldn’t be forced to pay for radical, race-based ‘reparation’ payments to please the woke Left," Babin told Fox News.
The California state reparations task force, which was established in 2020 to examine possible reparation for black Californians who are descendants of slaves, released its preliminary report with a number of recommendations in May.

The estimated cost of the reparations is $800 billion, according to some experts, with a proposed draft showing black residents who have lived in California and are 71 years old or over could receive up to $1.2 million in payments.
The task force is set to hold a final meeting this week before sharing its final plan with the state legislature before the July deadline.
