Multiple news outlets have barred the bot used to "crawl" and scan the internet for ChatGPT's training material from accessing their content, a gesture that could severely limit OpenAI's training.

The New York Times was one of the first news outlets to block GPTBot, a "web crawler" designed to gather content from various websites for training or cataloging, from accessing its contents. CNN, Reuters, the Chicago Tribune, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and several local Australian outlets joined the New York Times. Blocking this bot means that OpenAI cannot take the information from their websites to train future versions of ChatGPT.

"Allowing GPTBot to access your site can help AI models become more accurate and improve their general capabilities and safety," OpenAI wrote in a blog post.

News outlets have already begun taking action to bar artificial intelligence from using their content, and the New York Times amended its terms of service on Aug. 14 to prohibit AI from using its content.

Multiple international outlets, including the French newswire Agence France-Presse and Getty Images, signed an open letter calling for AI to be regulated, including transparency about the "makeup of all training sets used to create AI models."

Tech companies that are training AI have tried to find compromises. Google proposed AI systems be allowed to scrape the work of news publishers unless they explicitly opt out.
